RIDE FOR THE CURE

In its second year (and first year as an official event of the Greater Nashville Affiliate), the Ride for the Cure, held April 21 at Beachhaven Winery, was a fabulous event! Teams competed for online pledges and participants, and we raised over $70,000! Over 750 participants showed up for a day of energy and commitment toward Komen's promise, to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. We were joined by Miss USA, Rachel Smith, and scores of other activites and survivors.

Spring 2006 marked the beginning of the Annual Komen Nashville Ride for the Cure®. Inspired by his mother Sandy Bridegam, a breast cancer survivor, and friend Jennifer Warren, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, ride chairman Scott Bridegam and fellow members of the Clarksville Cycling Club set out to organize an event to involve cyclists from the Middle Tennessee area in raising funds for breast cancer research and support.

In searching for an organization with which to partner in this endeavor, The Greater Nashville Affliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was selected for its reputation of integrity, experience (the Komen Race for the Cure® 5k race series), and the fact that up to 75% of the net proceeds stay in the Greater Nashville area, eleven counties including Montgomery, to support local education, screening, and treatment programs. A minimum of 25% of net funds raised support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program.

The inaugural event saw 345 participants and raised more than $10,400 for Komen for the Cure. This year, with your help and participation, we believe we can easily double or triple the success of that first event and continue that growth into the future.

Your support and participation helps Komen to continue to fund promising new research and provide education, screening, and treatment to those who need it most.
