Project Pink Breast Cancer Educational Outreach for Working Women | Sumner Regional Health Systems, Inc.| www.sumner.org

Women in the workforce must balance many roles. They dedicate themselves to 40-hour work weeks and then serve as wives, mothers, and home-makers. Over 75% of teachers working in public schools systems are women and many yound women are working and attending school. Too often, with such overwhelming schedules, women neglect their own health. Members of the Cancer Committee at Sumner Regional Health Systems, Inc have planned a program to bring information about breast cancer and treatment to working women at area companies and industries. The goal is to create awareness of the importance of breast exams and screening and to encourage working women to make time for their own exams.
To ensure the project's success, SRHS will employ a dedicated individual to serve as a principle facilitator. The facilitator will gather educational materials and schedule informational visits to selected employers and schools during convenient hours in order to reach as many working women as possible without interfering with job duties. The program will be offered to companies within Sumner County as well as employers in medically underserved rural counties surrounding Sumner that are part of the SRHS service area.

Breast Health Initiative | Student Community Health Coalition of the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services | www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/chs

The Student Community Health Coalition (SCHC) Breast Health Initiative provides breast health and breast cancer education and support in thirteen Tennessee counties. The program empowers women to understand risks and early detection options, reducing fears and reliance on cancer myths. It connects underserved women to screening options and provides free clinical breast exams and breast health education on evenings and weekends to broaden options for working women. By using survivors as Breast Health Advocates who take action against breast cancer the program mobilizes the special strengths of these women who are extremely effective in encouraging other women to seek follow-up screening and care following breast cancer or initial mammograms.

Increasing Access to Breast Cancer Education and Screenings to Uninsured Women | Siloam Family Health Center | www.siloamhealth.org/

The Siloam Family Health Center with the support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Greater Nashville Affiliate, will provide breast cancer screening and education for refugee, immigrant and uninsured women in Nashville, TN. Many women in this target population face multiple barriers to accessing quality healthcare and prevention information. More than 70% of Siloam’s patients live at 0% - 250% of the federal poverty level, of this total, 21% live below the poverty level. In addition to poverty, many women in this group experience language and cultural barriers that create even more access issues. Grant funds will be used to provide screening, clinical breast examination and instruction in self breast examination for 300 women in the target population. An additional 250 women, those bringing parents, children or neighbors to Siloam for care, will have access to self breast exam education conducted by volunteers while they wait on those they bring to the clinic.

Witness Project of Davidson County | Metro Public Health Dept, Nashville/Davidson County | healthweb.nashville.gov/

This volunteer organization of breast and cervical cancer survivors witness to African American women about the importance of regular screenings to reduce mortality from these cancers. The witnesses use story-telling and experiential learning techniques to increase awareness, knowledge, and the need for screenings in the African-American community. The church and other community organizations are the focal point for witnessing their personal stories of survival. Other volunteers serve as community educators, explaining the correct way to conduct a breast self exam, sharing educational materials, the importance of Pap test, and referring women needing mammograms to community resources.

Mammograms in May 2007 | Friends in General, Inc. | www.nashville.gov/general_hospital/aboutus_friends.htm

We propose to provide free screening mammograms and, for the uninsured, necessary follow up care for women over the age of 40 years as part of Nashville General Hospital’s (NGH) fifth annual Mammograms in May (MIM) program. While MIM’s major focus will be on women from Davidson County, historically 20% of MIM participants have come from the other nine counties in the Affiliate’s service area: Rutherford, Cheatham, Dickson, Maury, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, and Williamson. The idea behind MIM (first launched in conjunction with Mother’s Day 2003) is to raise awareness about breast cancer and to encourage women (especially minorities and those who are uninsured) to seek early screening, which saves so many lives. Based on prior experience, we expect that nearly 70% of the participants will lack health insurance. (NGH waives the co-pay and deductible for those women fortunate enough to have insurance.) The program has been a huge success having served 1,612 women the last four years, many of whom might have delayed or not sought mammography screening. A nurse navigator will help women find needed care and support throughout the screening, follow-up diagnostic and survivorship processes. Since 2004,we have found 14 women with undiagnosed breast cancer.

Rural Transportation | The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation| www.minniepearl.com

The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation Rural Transportation Outreach project is designed to provide a more comprehensive level of transportation assistance for breast cancer patients living in outlying Davidson County and contiguous counties. The initiative will a) increase awareness of available services among rural breast cancer patients in need, b) give direct assistance to allow clients to access necessary radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and c) help stablize their diagnosis and reduce breast cancer fears through other available support services. The project addresses as important need in rural communities, as increases in the rolls of the unisured, higher poverty levels, and prohibitive gas prices, make it more difficult for rural breast cancer patients of Middle Tennessee to access and utlize services.
